Meet G Scott Paterson

Mr. Paterson has served on the Board of Directors for a multitude of public companies listed on multiple exchanges including the TSX, TSXV, NEO, NYSE and AIM (UK) and has served on and chaired Audit, Risk, Compensation and Nominating Board Committees.

Mr. Paterson was a Top 40 Under 40, has been a TedTalk speaker, had a chapter dedicated to him in Peter C Newman’s #1 best seller: Titans, was profiled in Time Magazine as ‘One of Canada’s 21st Century Leaders’, was profiled in Newsweek as ‘One of 17 People to Watch Globally’, was awarded Western University’s top Alumni Purple & White Award and has been a keynote speaker on behalf of countless organizations including Mastercard, EY Entrepreneur of the Year and the National Angel Capital Organization.

Mr. Paterson has served as a Trustee of the Art Gallery of Ontario, obtained his ICD.d designation as a graduate of the Institute of Corporate Director’s at Rotman School of Management, earned a Certificate in Entertainment Law from Osgoode Hall Law School, and holds an active ACTRA membership.

In the financial services arena, Mr. Paterson began his career as a financial advisor in 1985 becoming the Head of Dominion Securities Pitfield’s President’s Club (the top producer of all advisors in their first three years in the business). He moved into investment banking in the early 90s becoming the #1 tech banker in Canada (as measured by fees generated) while at Midland Walwyn and in 1995 was recruited to join Yorkton Securities where he built the company, initially as Executive VP then as Chair & CEO, into Canada’s leading technology, biotechnology, health care and media investment bank. Mr. Paterson opened offices in New York and Chicago (and held personal Series 7 and 24 licenses) which contributed to the spectacular growth under his leadership from $15 million in revenue in his first year to $244 million five years later. During Mr. Paterson’s tenure, Yorkton was consistently ranked by Brendan Wood International as the #1 Canadian investment bank in a number of lead underwritings, quality of research and market share of trading, while raising over $3 billion as lead underwriter and over $9 billion as co-managing underwriter.

Mr. Paterson has also served as Chair of the Board of the Toronto Venture Stock Exchange, Vice-Chair of the Toronto Stock Exchange, a Governor of the Investment Dealers Association, a Director of the Canadian Investor Protection Fund, a Director of the Canadian Securities Institute and a Director of the Canadian Securities Advisory Council. In 2004, Mr. Paterson co-founded Symbility Solutions, a SaaS platform utilized by insurance companies to optimally process property claims, where he served as Board Chair. Symbility (TSXV:SY) was listed on the Toronto Venture Exchange when it was sold to Corelogic (NYSE:CLGX) in 2018 for $162 million.

Mr. Paterson serves today on the Board of Coinsmart Financial Inc (NEO:SMRT), a leading crypto exchange, as well as Verses Technologies Inc (NEO:VERS), a leader in the burgeoning Spatial Web world.

In the media space, Mr. Paterson was the second investor in Lionsgate Entertainment (NYSE:LGF.A) when the company was founded in 1997. He served as a Board member for 21 years including as Chair of the Audit & Risk Committee for 15 years and today serves as a Director of Lions Gate Entertainment Canada Corp. Mr. Paterson co-founded JumpTV in 2005, orchestrated, as Chairman & CEO, the company’s 2006 $71 million IPO led by Morgan Stanley, and drove the acquisition of NeuLion Inc in 2008 assuming the role of Vice-Chairman of the Board. NeuLion/JumpTV was sold to Endeavour Group (NYSE:EDR) in 2018 for $325 million. In 2014, Mr. Paterson co-founded and serves as Board Chair of Los Angeles-based QYOU Media Inc. (TSX:QYOU), whose principal asset is Mumbai-based The Q India media brand. Mr. Paterson is also the Lead Director of Giftagram Inc., a rapidly growing e-commerce mobile gifting app and technology-based corporate gifting platform. In addition, he serves as a Board member of the Canadian Film Centre’s Idea Boost Program.

Mr. Paterson and his wife Sarah support multiple charitable endeavors including having established bursaries at Ridley College as well as at Western University and, in 2000, Mr. Paterson donated to establish the G. Scott Paterson Wing at the Schulich Medical School at Western. Mr. Paterson co-founded the Merry Go Round Children’s Foundation and its Kids, Cops & Computers program (now ComKids) in 1998 where he continues to be very passionate as Chair of the Board. Mr. Paterson has served as Governor of Ridley College for 24 years including having co-Chaired the School’s 125th Anniversary Campaign and currently co-Chairing The Campaign for Ridley. In 2018, Mr. Paterson donated to establish Ridley’s Paterson Performance Centre which will open in the Fall of 2023.
